Approaching Jazz Standards
Each month the class will take a deep dive into the standards heard at jam sessions. Learn how to interact with fellow bandmates and how to read and navigate the chord changes all to demystify the art of jazz improvisation.
The class will focus on learning melodies and how to create unique-to-the-performer interpretations through comprehensive listening and ear training. Chord symbols will be broken down to understand what they mean and what notes and scales are appropriate to use.
Ear training will be used to not only learn how jazz artists performed melodies, but also to recognize the intervals and chords while soloing in a jazz combo or big band. This skill will also be used extensively when transcribing patterns and solos from the recordings of jazz artists.
This is open to all instrumental musicians (Vocalists too!). The class will meet every Monday evening from 7:30-8:30. Sign up is at the start of each month. Participation is on a monthly basis to allow flexibility due to personal scheduling or simply to study specific songs. The cost is $25 per week and is asked for the month to be paid in full at the start of each month.
Classes begin in October. To join, contact the director, Brandon Morse, at bmorsemusic@gmail.com or call or text 316-288-9089.
